The Museum System
The project, jointly presented by the Municipality of Ostuni , which is the leader, and by the Municipality of Fasano aims to set up the Museum System Ostuni – Fasano, made up of the Museum of Pre-Classical Civilizations of Southern Murgia and of the Outdoor Museums including the Archaeological and Natural Park of Santa Maria di Agnano, in the area of the Municipality of Ostuni and the Cave Park of Lama d’ Antico, San Giovanni and San Lorenzo in the region of the Municipality of Fasano.
From a practical point of view the plan is aimed to allow people to make a better use of the sites, to provide them with new facilities that will be jointly run and to favour tour operators’ involvement in the museum system in order to give the artistic heritage a better opportunity to be marketed.
From a cultural point of view the making of the Museum System allows to walk through time. The tour of the sites gives visitors the opportunity to go through a very long period of time, ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Modern Age and to see the numerous prehistoric finds in Santa Maria di Agnano in Ostuni (Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Metal Age) Messapian, Roman Paleocristian evidences in Egnathia, and Medieval cave civilization traces in Lama d’Antico
The cave life theme and the different utilizations of caves –in the course of history-come out: caves were inhabited in all the Prehistoric Age, with the outstanding multi-stratified evidence of Santa Maria di Agnano; tunnelled churches and villages were already hanged out in the Neolithic period, Egnathia where the room- shaped graves were re-utilized as tunnelled houses after the town desertion
